Dory assisted new friend Marlin in his search for son Nemo in Disney Pixar's "Finding Nemo." The clown fish will return the favor when Dory starts her journey to discover her past and parents in "Finding Dory."

Jim Morris, president of Disney Pixar Studios, announced the synopsis for the long-awaited sequel to the 2003 film at CCXP - Comic Con Experience in Brazil, according to ComicBookMovie.com. Ellen Degeneres and Albert Brooks will reprise their voice roles as Dory and Marlin.

The movie follows Dory, Marlin and Nemo on their journey to discover where the lovable blue fish came from before she landed in the Great Barrier Reef. It will be set at the Marine Biology Institute of California, a huge complex of rehabilitation for marine life.

Dory learns that she was born and raised there and was released in the ocean when she was a kid. "Finding Dory" will also introduce new characters such as an octopus, sea lions, a beluga whale and more.

DeGeneres tirelessly campaigned for the sequel on her talk show. Disney Pixar Studios officially announced the film in April 2013.

"I have waited for this day for a long, long, long, long, long, long time," DeGeneres said in a statement. "I'm not mad it took this long. I know the people at Pixar were busy creating Toy Story 16. But the time they took was worth it. The script is fantastic. And it has everything I loved about the first one: It's got a lot of heart, it's really funny, and the best part is - it's got a lot more Dory."

Originally slated for release on Nov. 25, 2015, "Finding Dory" will now premiere on June 17, 2016.
