Former South African president and peace icon, Nelson Mandela, remains in hospital for the 4th consecutive day as family members have flown into the country to be by his bedside during this time, reports say.

Official South African government reports and reports from the hospital describe Mandela's condition as "serious but stable" without offering more details. He was admitted for a lung infection which he has suffered from since his 27 years in Robben Island prison during the Apartheid era in South Africa.

However,  report by CBS News, citing an unnamed source, said. Mandela was in a medical "crisis" and had to be resuscitated by a medical team at his home last Friday night, shortly before he was rushed to hospital at about 1:30 a.m.

The report goes on to say Madiba - who he is lovingly known as in the country - suffers from impaired liver and kidney functions which work at only 50 percent of their normal level. It said he was in the hospital's intensive care unit, and had also been treated for a bleeding ulcer.

However, none of this information have been confirmed or denied by the South African government. Meanwhile, Mandela's wife Graca Machel cancelled an appearance in London and has been by the hospital bed of 94-year-old Mandela. His eldest daughter Zenani Mandela-Dlamini returned from Argentina, where she is the South African ambassador.

Mandela has been in a frail condition, having been hospitalized 4 times this past year. He has not been photographed or seen in the past 10 months, and the most recent image of the former president was from when current president Jacob Zuma went to visit him at his home. Mandela appeared frail, frozen-faced, unable to smile, and almost unresponsive.

The country is uniting and sending well-wishes to the beloved president and hopes for a speedy recovery.
