Joko Widodo, nicknamed Jokowi, took his oath and became Indonesia's president, according to the BBC. Widodo won the election in July and a court held up the vote after an appeal was filed in August by the opponent, Prabowo Subianto.

The inauguration was held at the parliament in the capital city, Jakarta. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott were in attendance, according to the BBC.

Widodo is the first Indonesian president that does not come from a military or political heritage. He is the former governor of Jakarta.

Festivities include a post-inaugural horse-drawn carriage to the palace with Vice-President Jusuf Kalla and an outdoor rock concert on Monday night.

Although 24,000 military and police officers will be standing by, the vibe in the capital is one of celebration, BBC Indonesia Editor Karishma Vaswani reported.
