Well, it's official.

Arizona Cardinals running back Jonathan Dwyer has been formally charged with assaulting his wife.

The charges stem from two incidents that occurred during arguments in July at their Phoenix apartment.

It was also reported originally that Dwyer had struck his 17-month-old son who wasn't injured, but there are no formal charges pertaining to that incident.

The charges against Dwyer, released publicly in an indictment on Friday, instead are "felony aggravated assault and eight misdemeanors."

A "status conference" has been scheduled for Dwyer by the NFL on October 6th. The league has said that his case will be reviewed under the personal-conduct policy, and no changes will be made to his status as an NFL player until then, according to USA Today

He is currently on the reserve/non-football illness list, which prevents him from playing for Arizona again this season. This news also means that he may never play anywhere in the NFL again.

The league is already dealing with several serious high-profile domestic violence cases. With stars like Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson, teams may be tempted in the future to take a chance on them, despite their baggage.

Should they be reinstated, their prodigious talent will be enough to draw some hard luck team to giving them an opportunity. Dwyer is talented, but his abilities are nowhere near those of Rice or Peterson.

Dwyer was originally booked on September 17th on suspicion of aggravated assault against his son.

USA Today reported that "it's not unusual for grand juries to return slightly different charges than those initially brought in a case."

The incident allegedly originally occurred because Dwyer's wife "learned about his recent phone contact with another woman and came to believe her husband was cheating."
