HTC is planning an extreme sports camera model. Official details on the new device are not known, but a source familiar with the matter told Bloomberg that the HTC camera will be waterproof and capable of resisting extreme conditions. If true, this will be the first sports camera by HTC to challenge GoPro's sports-camera monopoly.

HTC's rumored camera is expected to pack 16 megapixels in a tube-shaped body compared to GoPro Hero3+'s 12-megapixel camera. GoPro is expected to launch the Hero 4 next year, which will feature slightly improved sensors at 13-megapixels. The rumored debut camera by HTC is expected to carry several other specs and features, such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to connect with smartphones, mobile app integration on Android and iOS platforms. The camera is apparently under beta stage, so official details are unlikely until the product is ready for debut.

GoPro has garnered a fan base for its small rugged cameras that are easy to use and mount. The company offers various models such as HERO3+ Black Edition, HERO3 White Edition and HERO3+ Silver Edition. The upcoming HERO 4 is expected to feature better performance, upgraded 1GHz processor and video shooting at 30fps, making it an enticing product for sports photographers, Christian Today reported.

HTC is expected to unveil the camera alongside a new smartphone optimized for taking selfies at a press event in New York, Oct. 8, the source added. The event details are minimal, with invites titled "double exposure."

HTC has faced strong competition from rivals Xiaomi and Lenovo, which has resulted in 12 straight quarters of ailing sales. Expansion of the product line might help the Taiwanese tech giant generate some additional revenue to help sustain the pressure from giants.
