Cheerios commercials are usually wholesome and funny. They usually include a baby enjoying the cereal as a snack or an older individual enjoying a bowl in an effort to keep their heart healthy. However a recent commercial for the General Mills cereal has received some severe negative feedback, according to the New York Daily News.

Cheerios posted one of its recent commercials on YouTube. The commercial depicted a moment between a Caucasian woman and her daughter. After the young girl talks with her mother about how good Cheerios is for her heart, her African-American father wakes up with a large amount of the cereal covering the area of his shirt where his heart would be located.

The ad is doing well, racking up more than 270,000 views. However, the company was forced to disable commenting on the video after viewers started talking about Nazis, mass murder of a particular race, and wanting “to vomit.” While the negative feedback concerning race seemed to mount, there were many who praised the ad on the Cheerios Facebook page.

Rhonda Spangler said:

I just read about your newest commercial featuring the interracial family and wanted to say kudos to you Cheerios, I knew you were my favorite cereal for a reason!

Having been mixed in the 70s, I’d like to thank everyone at Cheerios for making a commercial with an interracial couple! Going to buy boxes today! Many thanks for reflecting what my family looked like.

Camille Gibson, vice president of marketing for Cheerios, acknowledged the positive feedback and added in a statement, “At Cheerios, we know there are many kinds of families and we celebrate them all.”
