Sony continues to dominate the video game industry with its best-selling PlayStation 4 leading the pack in North American sales in June.

Electronics giant Sony seems unaffected by Xbox One's $100 cheaper price tag as the PlayStation 4 outsells Microsoft's gaming console for the sixth consecutive month. Market analytics firm NPD released the monthly sales report for video game hardware and software to crown PlayStation 4 as the best-selling game console in North America in June.

Following NPD's report, Sony tweeted the news from PlayStation's official Twitter account, Friday. The latest report from NPD comes only a day after Microsoft announced that the sales of Kinect-less Xbox One more than doubled in the US last month, compared to the sales in May. Clearly, Sony is far ahead of Microsoft in the game console war as the doubled sales did not help the Redmond-based software giant to scale up to the top position.

Putting aside the competition between the two tech titans, NPD reported a 106 percent increase in hardware sales compared to June last year, which was mainly contributed by more than 200 percent increase in game console sales.

"Combined sales of Xbox One and PS4 are over 80 percent higher than the combined totals for Xbox 360 and PS3 - an indication of the strength of the start of this new console generation," Game Zone quoted from NPD Group's press release.

According to NPD Group, the overall software sales did fairly well but dipped 67 percent compared to last year. Ubisoft's open-world action game, Watch Dogs, available on PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3 and PC, continued to dominate the software sales in June. Most of the games in the top ten list remain the same from last month, which includes Mario Kart 8 and Wolfenstein: The New Order.

Video games sales in June generated $736.4 million, up 24 percent from last year. Nearly half, $300 million, of the video game sales came in from hardware sales, NPD added.

After a successful launch in November, Sony has sold 7 million units of PS4 as of early April, whereas Xbox One has only shipped 5 million units worldwide as of April. Both companies remain secretive with the sales figures.
