An old “Game of Thrones” theory has gone viral, but fans of George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Fire and Ice” saga would say it’s not anything you can’t come to a conclusion from reading the first novel.

[Warning: this article is filled with plot spoilers.]

The fan theory stated in the video below claims Jon Snow is the son of Ned Stark’s sister Lyanna and her “husband” Rhaegar Targaryen. The theory claims the King’s Guard was defending Lyanna in the tower and the pool of blood found by her body was from birthing Jon.

Lyanna allegedly was not kidnapped by the Tagaryens, but ran away with Rhaegar willingly, even though he was married to Elia Martell. When Ned found Lyanna in the infamous Tower, she supposedly made him promise to never tell anyone of Jon’s true paternity and raise him as if he was his own.

Fans claim Ned cannot have fathered Jon as his point-of-view chapters in the series show he is an honorable man who wouldn’t betray his wife. There is also a point in on the novels where Ned names his children in his head: Robb, Sansa, Arya, Bran and Rickon. He adds Jon in a separate sentence, but never refers to him as his son. Ned is also quoted referring to Jon as his blood, not his son.

Martin has made it blatantly obvious in the series that Jon is an important character. If the fan theory is true, Jon would possess the blood of a Targaryen and a Stark, it also means his genetics contain the blood of the dragon and warging abilities. Many have come to the conclusion the “song” the saga is referring to is about Jon and Daenerys Targaryen’s journey to the Iron Throne.

Another popular belief is the three-headed dragon Daenerys’ has visions of refers to the three Targaryens left: herself, Jon and Master Aemon at The Wall. Many believe Jon and Daenerys will end up taking over the Iron Throne, but Jon’s vows to The Night’s Watch complicate this theory.

Jon took an oath to take no wives, father no children and wear no crowns. This isn’t to say Jon cannot break his vows to rule Westeros, as he did when he had a sexual relationship with Ygritte.

Even Sean Bean, the actor who played Ned Stark, doesn’t believe he is Jon Snow’s father. During an interview with Vulture, Bean revealed he wants his character to come back to the show to help reveal Jon’s true paternity.

"I've definitely got some unfinished business that needs to be resolved there," Bean said, referring to the "Game of Thrones" series. "I'm obviously not Jon Snow's dad. And you need that to be revealed at some point, don't you?”
