Malcolm X's grandson Malcolm Shabazz, was laid to rest Tuesday at a cemetery in New York, according to contactmusic.com.

Shabazz was beaten to death May 9 in Mexico over an alleged dispute over a bar tab at The Palace Grille. Two suspects have been arrested in connection with his death, contactmusic.com says. Shabazz was the son of Qubilah Shabazz, the daughter of Malcolm X.

The 28-year-old grandson of civil rights activist Malcom X was buried at the Ferncliff Cemetery in in Hartsdale, N.Y., according to contactmusic.com. His mother Quibilah and a few close friends were reportedly in attendence. The private ceremony was also attended by rapper Jaheim, a friend of Shabazz's. He sang a personal version of "I Miss You (For Moms)" at the funeral.

Labor activist Miguel Suarez said he was with Shabazz when he was beat up during a dispute over a $1,200 bill at the bar in Mexico City, according to an Associated Press story. Two waiters, David Hernandez Cruz and Manuel Alejandro Perez de Jesus, have been charged with homicide, according to News One.

Malcolm Shabazz led a life of uncertainty and despair at times. In 1997, at the age of 12, he set a fire in his grandmother Betty Shabazz's home. She eventually died of severe burns. Shabazz served four years in juvenile detention for the incident. He served time for attempted robbery from 2002 to 2005.

A spokesperson for the family, Terrie Williams, told the AP she had been mentoring Shabazz at the time of his death.
