Sherri Shepherd is finally speaking about her divorce and custody of her children.

While at the 13th Annual Samsung Hope for Children Gala in New York City Tuesday "the View" co-host said that facing the "craziness" surrounding her personal life was hard.

"I know that you cannot grow without pain," Shepherd told E! News. "Growth is hard and growth is a struggle, and it hurts and you've got to go through that in order to grow or you stay the same. And also, I feel as long as you can get up and look up, you have another chance and another chance to make things right.

Shepherd added: "Again, going through all my craziness, I hope that my character and my integrity speaks for me, so I stand behind that."

The 47-year-old TV personality filed divorce documents in New Jersey last month, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason behind the separation. Shepherd's husband of nearly three years, Lamar Sally, submitted his own separation documents three day prior.

"I say you can't beat yourself up when you know you've made the wrong choice in a guy," Shepherd told Us Weekly. "You look, you do some introspective work, and you try not to make the same mistake. If you do, get back up, dust your feet off, and start walking and moving forward."

Shepherd and Sally do not have any children together, but are expecting a child via surrogate this July. Sally is asking for full legal and physical custody of the unborn baby and requesting the court give documents to "prevent [Shepherd] from interfering with his ability to take the kid with him after the birth."

To deal with her separation, Shepherd said it is important to surround herself with good friends including former "View" co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck.

"Have really good friends around you, so you have a soft landing place," she told Us Weekly. "I have really amazing friends. I have a lot of really wonderful friends [who] say 'erase that!'"

This is Shepherd's second divorce. She was previously married to Jeff Tarpley from 2001 to 2010 and the former couple shares a nine-year-old son.
