BMW and Mercedes-Benz have issued recalls for their cars due to snafus with engines and lights.

Mercedes is recalling over 284,000 C-Class cars in the U.S. and Canada due to possible failures with the rear lights, according to USA Today.  Cars affected include models of C300, C350 and C63 AMG cars from the years 2008 through 2011.

Corrosion on a connector can lead to the brake, tail or rear turn signal lights dimming or failing, which can make cars less visible to other drivers. This issue can increase the risk of a car crash.

A Mercedes spokesman said the recall also affects cars in other countries, but he did not say how many, Ksat.com reported. The automaker said drivers will see a dashboard warning message if the issue occurs.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said dealers will replace bulb holders and rusted connectors and that customers will not have to pay any of the costs. Replacement parts are not expected to be available for the vehicles until August or September.

BMW is recalling over 156,000 cars and SUVs in the U.S. because of a possibility that the engines could lose power or stall, Ksat.com reported. The recall includes models from 2010 through 2012, and includes the 128i, 328i, 135i, 335i, 528i, 535i, 640i and Z4 cars.

X3, X5 and X6 SUVs are also covered.

The automaker said bolts that hold a camshaft housing can loosen or break, which can cause reduced power or stalling and up the chances of a collision.

The NHTSA said dealers will replace the bolts at no cost to owners, USA Today reported. BMW expects the recall to begin in May. The automaker said another 17,000 vehicles from 2010 through 2012 with inline six-cylinder engines will not be recalled, but they will receive an extended warranty because of the issue.

The NHTSA said that there have been over 17 million motor vehicle recalls internationally for the first four months of 2014.
