A 19-year-old woman was fatally shot by Albuquerque Police in a foot chase on Monday.

According to CBS News, Police Chief Gordon Eden said officers were on the hunt for the woman, Mary Hawkes, after she allegedly stole a car. Around 6 a.m., an officer spotted the theft suspect and began running after her.

"The suspect stopped, turned and pointed a handgun at close range," Eden told KRQE-TV. "The officer fired at the suspect."

Hawkes was pronounced dead at the scene, CBS News said.

"All I heard was the three gunshots and it turned quiet," nearby resident Alberto Lopez told KRQE-TV. "I didn't hear no yelling, no nothing. I just heard a lot of cop cars coming."

The police department has not identified the officer who shot Hawkes but mentioned he or she has been put on standard paid leave.

Hawkes was the daughter of former Belen, New Mexico police officer and retired Valencia County Judge Danny Hawkes, according to KRQE-TV. She was also arrested twice in the past year for underage drinking and shoplifting.

On Monday night, a candlelit vigil was held for Hawkes, attended by protesters who left drawings at the scene of the crime.

The Albuquerque Police Department has dealt with national scrutiny ever since the fatal shooting of a homeless man after footage of their altercation went viral.

Additionally, the Department of Justice issued a scathing report on April 10 expressing concern for the department's use of excessive and unnecessary force.
