It's only been 36 years, but Tim Burton's cult-hit is back with a sequel: "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice."

Michael Keaton continues the Beetlejuice legacy, joined by Winona Ryder and Catherine O'Hara returning to their iconic roles as Lydia and Delia Deetz. Jenna Ortega from Burton's "Wednesday" steps into the role of Lydia's daughter, Astrid, while Justin Theroux from "The Leftovers" takes on the character of Rory.

The classic "Beetlejuice" (1988) revolves around Barbara and Adam Maitland, who, after their untimely demise, seek assistance from the mischievous spirit Beetlejuice, portrayed by Keaton. Their aim? To evict the living Deetz family from their home, leading to absolute chaos.

The sequel picks up decades later with a death in the family. "That's all I will say," Burton tells EW in an interview.

"There's something that happens that sets things in motion."

Burton describes getting Keaton back in the classic costume and makeup as "a weird out-of-body experience."

Burton says he and Keaton have toyed with the idea of a sequel off and on for years.

"Unless it felt right, he had no burning desire to do it," the director recalls.

"I think we all felt the same way. It only made sense if it had an emotional hook."

The film's specifics remain shrouded in secrecy at this stage, but what's known is the star-studded cast, featuring Monica Bellucci, Arthur Conti, and Willem Dafoe.

"Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" will arrive in theaters on Sept. 6.
