United States President Joe Biden was found trailing behind former President Donald Trump in a new national poll by more than 20 points, with the handling of the economy at the forefront of the discussions.

Other issues that were factors in voters' favor of a presidential hopeful included the situation at the border. The recent figures come despite the Democratic president's recent argument that his administration's economic policies are beginning to take effect.

On Thursday, Biden told voters in Michigan that "inflation is coming down" and that his administration has successfully helped create 800,000 manufacturing jobs. Despite his remarks, 55% of registered voters said that they believe Trump is the better choice for a candidate in handling the U.S. economy, compared to only 33% who chose Biden.

Furthermore, the Republican businessman also boasts large leads over Biden when it comes to securing the border, 35 points, having the necessary mental and physical health to be president, 23 points, and dealing with crime and violence, 21 points, as per Fox News.

The Republican businessman was also found to have double-digit leads against his Democratic rival when it comes to being competitive and effective, 16 points and improving the country's standing in the world, 11 points.

The figures regarding being competitive and effective may be the most concerning ones for the sitting president. This is because it represents a massive shift in numbers from 2020 when Biden led Trump in the same question by nine points.

Democrat pollster Jeff Horwitt of Hart Research Associates said that what is most concerning is the erosion of the president's standing against his Republican rival compared to what was seen four years ago.

On top of local issues, the survey also showed that 60% of registered voters disapprove of Biden's management of the Israel-Hamas conflict in the Gaza Strip. However, Biden had a slight edge against Trump when respondents were asked which candidate would be better at protecting democracy, leading by two points, according to The Hill.

Potential Presidential Race Rematch

On the latest poll's final question, which asked whom respondents would vote for if Trump is found guilty and convicted of a felony this year, Biden jumped ahead. Out of all of the respondents, 45% said they would vote for the Democrat while 43% said they would vote for the Republican.

A co-founder of BSP Research, Matt Barreto said that the latest poll had some serious sample concerns. He noted that it over-represents white voters and conservatives while it under-represents Democrats and Latinos.

He noted that it was critical to point out a poll's shortcomings just as much as its findings before pundits quickly jump to conclusions about the state of the race. Barreto said that this is particularly true when it appears as an outlier when placed in the context of other polls.

Earlier this month, a separate poll showed that Trump narrowly led Biden in a general election rematch. That particular poll highlighted voters' conflicted feelings regarding the two leading candidates. Broad majorities of Democrats and Republicans argued that they would be satisfied if their party's candidate won such a rematch, according to CNN.
