This move effectively halted the GOP's efforts to denounce the sole Palestinian-American serving in Congress for her recent statements regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict, as per CBS News.

WASHINGTON, DC - SEPTEMBER 19: Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) speaks at a news conference on the introduction of the "Restaurant Workers Bill of Rights" outside the U.S. Capitol Building on September 19, 2023 in Washington, DC. Lawmakers held the news conference alongside members of the Restaurant Opportunity Center United organization to hear stories about those who work in the restaurant industry and their requests for countrywide improved working conditions.

The House of Representatives recently witnessed a battle over censuring two of its members, Rep. Rashida Tlaib and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. The Democrat-led motion to table the resolution against Tlaib ended in a vote of 222 to 186, with 23 Republicans breaking ranks to side with the Democrats.

This move effectively shelved the resolution, sparing Tlaib from having to address the allegations made against her on the House floor.

The resolution, introduced by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican from Georgia, accused Tlaib of several offenses, including "antisemitic activity, sympathizing with terrorist organizations, and leading an insurrection at the United States Capitol Complex."

The term "insurrection" used in the resolution was related to Tlaib's participation in an anti-war demonstration led by Jewish advocacy groups in a House office building.

It's important to note that this protest occurred in a public space within the building and did not involve any breach of the Capitol or violence against law enforcement. Interestingly, the same day, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene faced her censure vote initiated by a Democrat, Rep. Becca Balint from Vermont.

The resolution against Greene accused her of promoting "racism, antisemitism, LGBTQ hate speech, Islamophobia, anti-Asian hate, xenophobia, and other forms of hatred."

However, this resolution was promptly removed from the House schedule once the resolution against Tlaib was tabled. The fact that 23 Republican lawmakers voted with Democrats to table or kill the censure of Rep.

Tlaib showcased a bipartisan stance in favor of free speech and concerns over punishing elected officials for their expressions of political opinion. Tlaib, who is of Palestinian descent, has faced criticism for her remarks and comments regarding Israel and Palestine since her election to Congress in 2018, according to The Daily Beast.

Tlaib's Gaza Hospital Remarks

One of the critical incidents that drew significant attention was her speech to pro-Palestinian protesters before they marched to the Capitol. In the emotional speech, Tlaib described the impact of missile strikes on a Gaza hospital, which led to a flood of criticism, as she suggested that Israel was responsible for the attack.

However, both US intelligence and assessments from other countries supported Israel's claim that the incident was caused by an errant missile fired by Hamas terrorists. To this day, Tlaib has not removed the related social media posts.

In response to the censure attempt by Rep. Greene, Tlaib labeled it as "unhinged" and "deeply Islamophobic." Greene's resolution against Tlaib focused on her well-documented criticism of Israel and her support for Palestinians, particularly in the aftermath of terror attacks carried out by Hamas against Israel.

The resolution outlined a timeline of Tlaib's inflammatory rhetoric, including a comment from 2019 where she stated, "There's kind of a calming feeling I always tell folks when I think of the Holocaust."

The statement was linked to her reference to the Palestinian experience and the loss of land and lives during the Holocaust. Additionally, the resolution highlighted Tlaib's social media post from 2020, which featured an illustrated version of the quote, "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free," a slogan associated with the Palestine Liberation Organization that calls for the elimination of Israel.

The showdown in the House over these censure resolutions underscores the deeply divided political landscape and the tensions surrounding issues related to Israel and Palestine.

Tlaib's survival of the censure vote further solidified her position within the Democratic Party and her determination to continue advocating for her policy positions, including calls for a ceasefire, humanitarian aid, and the release of detainees, The Washington Times reported.
