Eleven bodies were discovered in eastern France after a fire ripped through a vacation home for people with intellectual disabilities.

In a devastating incident that unfolded in the early hours of the morning, a fire ravaged a holiday cottage for disabled people located in Wintzenheim, a town approximately 50 miles south of Strasbourg, France.

The blaze, which broke out before 6:30 am (0430 GMT), tragically claimed the lives of eleven individuals, officials have confirmed, according to New York Times.

Tragic Situation in French Holiday Cottage

The victims included individuals with learning disabilities as well as their caregivers, who were occupying the top floor of the two-storey building when the fire ignited.

The fire's rapid spread hindered their escape, and as the flames intensified, their lives were tragically cut short.

As Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne and other officials visited the site, Deputy Prosecutor Nathalie Kielwasser provided a grim confirmation of the death toll: "I can confirm there are 11 victims." Among the victims were ten people with disabilities and one caregiver.

Despite the valiant efforts of the firefighting teams, eight bodies were discovered amidst the wreckage, with three more expected to be found once the debris is carefully removed.

Seventeen individuals were successfully evacuated, with one person receiving medical attention for shock.

Authorities managed to bring the flames under control, but the inferno had already taken a significant toll on the building.

The tragic event unfolded as the holiday-goers were renting the cottage for the summer through two charities that specialize in caring for individuals with learning disabilities.

The visitors from the nearby city of Nancy were divided between the two floors of the house, and out of the total 28 occupants, seventeen managed to escape the fire's grip.

The authorities revealed that the victims were likely to have been between the ages of 25 and 50, as per Daily Mail.

Fatal Fire Strikes French Cottage, Sparking Investigation

Despite the efforts of search and rescue teams, it became evident that those on the top floor had been trapped by the flames, leaving little hope of survival.

The cause of the fire remains unknown at this point, and an investigation is set to be initiated by regional prosecutors.

Christophe Marot, Secretary General of the Haut Rhin prefecture, stated that there was a high probability that the victims were unable to escape due to the rapid progression of the fire.

The traditional semi-timbered building, showcasing the architectural style of the Alsace region, sustained significant damage from the blaze.

The fire, which likely began as a small smoldering flame before quickly escalating, reduced approximately two-thirds of the structure to ruins.

French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his condolences, saying, "In the face of this tragedy, my thoughts are with the victims, the injured and their families.

Thank you to our security forces and emergency services." Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin also expressed his gratitude to the firefighters and extended his sympathies to the victims' families.

As investigations into the incident are underway, the focus remains on understanding the circumstances that led to this horrific event.

The community, along with the nation, mourns the loss of eleven lives and the irreparable damage caused by the fire.

As the debris is cleared and the investigation unfolds, questions surrounding the origin of the blaze and the potential for preventing such tragedies in the future will likely take center stage, BBC reported.
