President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva called the Brazil axe attack a "monstrosity" that killed defenseless children.

An axe attack at a daycare facility in southern Brazil left four children dead and five more wounded. According to the local police, the deceased victims from Blumenau, a city in southern Brazil, were three boys and a girl, ranging in age from five to seven.

Santa Catarina's governor, Jorginho Mello, announced the arrest of a male suspect in the Brazil axe attack through Twitter.

According to CNN, the suspect, a 25-year-old man, is believed to have climbed over a wall onto the childcare center's playground before assaulting the kids.

Teachers defended the other pupils, and the Brazil axe attack suspect ran away, eventually surrendering to the police.

A police investigator in Blumenau, a city in southern Brazil on the Atlantic coast, informed broadcast TV journalists that they were trying to determine a motive of the Brazil axe attack suspect, according to The Guardian.

Parents sobbing outside the private daycare center known as Cantinho Bom Pastor were seen in television news reports.

The mayor of Blumenau, Mário Hildebrandt, announced 30 days of mourning and the suspension of school amid social media rumors of other possible assaults.

According to the mayor, five injured kids between the ages of three and five were sent to hospitals. One suffered serious injuries due to the axe attack.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva called the attack a "monstrosity," and it took place just a week after a 13-year-old pupil slashed a 71-year-old teacher in a Sao Paulo school, killing her and injuring five others, per Reuters.

Lula tweeted: "A tragedy like this is unacceptable, an absurd act of hate and cowardice...an act of violence against innocent and defenseless children."
