A top member of the Islamic State group in charge of organizing operations in Europe was killed by a drone attack carried out by the US-led coalition in northwest Syria, the US military announced on Tuesday, April 4.

The US military identified the drone attack casualty as Khalid Aydd Ahmad al-Jabouri. The armed forces noted that the Islamic State senior member's death would "temporarily disrupt the organization's ability" to plot external attacks," according to AP News.

According to opposition sources in northwest Syria, the victim arrived there 10 days ago and claimed to be a refugee from the province of Deir el-Zour in the east, which borders Iraq, as per a report from the Los Angeles Times.

The attack was the most recent in a string of assaults over the last several years that targeted top Islamic State members and militants with ties to Al Qaeda in northwest Syria.

Islamic State Losing Power

The Islamic State organized devastating assaults in Europe from the regions they once had under control that resulted in the deaths of many individuals. When the IS lost its final fragment of territory in March 2019, similar incidents declined.

For several years, US military bombings in rebel-held Idlib province killed most members of al-Qaeda affiliate Horas al-Din, Arabic for "Guardians of Religion," per The Times of Israel.

Among the group's members are ardent al-Qaeda supporters who defected from Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, the most powerful rebel organization in the province of Idlib.

Last month, the US military unleashed six targeted US drone attacks in Syria, killing eight Iranians in retaliation for an Iranian drone assault on a coalition base that killed one American, according to a previous HNGN report.
