Bryan Singer may have found success directing the "X-Men" movie franchise, but the same can't be said about his attempt at the "Man of Steel" franchise.

According to Den of Geek, Warner Bros. Studios dropped Singer after failing to have the "impact" on audiences they would have liked. Singer was slated to direct multiple "Superman" films, but executives decided to reboot the franchise into "Man of Steel".

In a recent interview with Empire magazine, Singer reflected on his vision for the failed "Superman Returns" and explains why the movie didn't fair so well at the box office.

"It was a movie made for a certain kind of audience. Perhaps more of a female audience," Singer told Empire (via Den of Geek). "It wasn't what it needed to be, I guess. I think I could lop the first quarter off and start the movie a bit more aggressively and maybe find a way to start the movie with the jet disaster sequence or something. I could have grabbed the audience a little more quickly".

Singer added part of him understands the negative reactions toward "Superman Returns", but the other part will never fully grasp what went wrong. Singer also explained to Empire why he didn't cast someone like Henry Cavill as the famous Man of Steel.

"I think Henry Cavill is great. I knew Henry. He and I were friends years ago. Oddly enough, the reason I didn't cast him was because I was making a sequel to Christopher Reeve and I wanted somebody who embodied Reeve more," Singer told Empire (via ComicBookMovie).

As for director Zack Snyder's vision for "Man of Steel", Singer explained it's a "tough" position to be in as a fellow director. Singer told Empire he was impressed by what Snyder accomplished in the film, but doesn't feel comfortable critiquing it.

"I know how hard it is to make a movie, especially one of these movies and especially a Superman movie," Singer explained. "...There were things I might have done a little differently just because of the way I view the character. Don't misinterpret that as me not liking something. It's not 'Bryan Singer's review of Man Of Steel'!"

The untitled "Man of Steel 2", nicknamed "Batman vs. Superman", is slated to hit theaters on May 6, 2016.
