Sony is capitalizing on its popular Xperia Z1 design with a rumored Sony D6503, but the unannounced smartphone will not take cues from the company's flagship phone entirely.

Sony showed off its two most recent entries, the Xperia Z1S and Xperia Z1 Compact, in the Xperia Z family at the CES 2014, earlier this month. The phone-maker is not yet ready to put aside its winning design. Leaked photos show a Sony D6503 model smartphone in the works, which is a close replica of the Xperia Z1. A member on xda-developers, who calls himself iRimas, posted a series of photos of the unannounced Sony D6503. By the looks of it, the new smartphone will have its own new features that will differentiate it from the flagship model.

Sony's work on the two new entries says a lot about the company's interest in the Z1 concept. Both new entries resemble the Sony Xperia Z1, the company's high- end smartphone. The Xperia Z1S is the same as Xperia Z1, but features a different name and is marketed exclusively to T-Mobile subscribers in the U.S. The Xperia Compact is simply the mini-version of Xperia Z1. With the current trend, it may be safe to say the rumored Sony D6503 will draw quite a few similarities with the Xperia Z1.

The details of the new Sony handset are unknown, but the leaked photos give a taste of what the upcoming model bears. The D6503 appears to have a 5.2-inch display, slightly bigger than Xperia Z1's 5.0-inch. The bottom of the phone is complimented with three large speaker holes compared to Z1's fine mesh speaker grill. The microSD ports sits alone on the right hand side of the phone, covered by a magnetic flap and the SIM card slot and the USB port are located on the left with covering flaps. On the Xperia Z1, the SIM card and microSD cards are switched and also feature individual covers.

According to a report from Android and Me, the new Sony model may feature a 20.7 megapixels rear shooter, like the Z1 and also Sony's G Lens sensor.

It is still unclear if the D6503 will debut at the biggest mobile exclusive event of the year, Mobile World Congress, next month. But Sony is not known to come empty-handed at such big events, so it might bring along its newest Xperia companion to the show.
