"The Newsroom" will return in 2014 for the HBO series third and final season, according to multiple reports.

The show was created by Aaron Sorkin and will begin production this year, Variety reports. Sorkin and HBO were reportedly in negotiations since show's second season finale in 2013.

"The Newsroom is classic Aaron Sorkin-smart, riveting and thought-provoking. I'm sure this farewell season will be one to remember," said HBO's Michael Lombardo in a statement.

Show stars Jeff Daniels, Emily Mortimer, Sam Waterson, John Gallagher Jr, Alison Pill, Dev Patel, Thomas Sadoski and Olivia Munn are all expected to return for the final season.

"The Sorkin creation, set behind the scenes at a cable news show, will have no shortage of potential news events to incorporate into the third season, including the Newtown School shooting (December 2012) and the Boston Marathon massacre (April 2013). The series' second season, which rolled out July 14, ended with a two-parter taking place on election night 2012," The Hollywood Reporter reports.

"The Newsroom" joins another HBO series set to end after its fifth season, "Boardwalk Empire", according to Deadline.  The show is set in the 1920s Prohibition era, following the story of the "leader" of Alantic City Enoch "Nucky" Thompson (played by Steve Buscemi).

"It has been an incredible honor to bring this powerful and groundbreaking series to our subscribers," Lombardo said in a statement. "Terry Winter has created one for the ages." Added creator/executive producer Winter, "After much discussion with my creative team and HBO, we've decided to wrap up the series after such a great run and look forward to bringing it to a powerful and exciting conclusion."
