The uproar caused by the permanent withdrawal of Thomas Gibson from Criminal Minds created a stir. Many followers believed kicking him out of the show was unnecessary and unfair, however, his character is desperately yearned for by the ardent fans of the series.

Criminal Minds Season 12 was labelled as a scandalous one. Thomas Gibson, who played the role of Aaron Hotchner in the American crime based investigative series was fired from the show after an unpleasant incident that took place between the series writer Virgil Williams and Thomas Gibson.

Despite fans being adamant on the fact that they want Thomas Gibson back, the network is not allowing his return. And Criminal Minds Season 12 won't be the same with his role. Aaron Hotchner's last appearance was in episode 2 and since then the series has been making up stories to cover for his uncalled for absence.

In episode 6 of Criminal Minds Season 12 titled as Elliot's Pond, it was revealed that Hotch was in witness protection not on a special assignment. Rossi played Joe Mantegna reveals that Hotch has to give up his position in the BAU to remain under the witness protection custody.

This is because Peter Lewis referred to as Mr. Scratch has been stalking his son, Jack (Cade Owens) during a soccer game. Rather than putting his son in danger again, Hotch then decided to leave just to protect his family.

As a result of Thomas Gibson's exit, Emily Prentiss will be replacing his position and the further cases will be handled under the supervision of Emily Prentiss.

The dropped rating observed after Thomas Gibson's exit has allowed Criminal Minds to suffer a huge loss. The diminishing ratings are daunting. Despite that, the team is not ready to rehire Thomas Gibson.

Many of the loyal fans launched a social media campaign highlighting their attachment with Gibson. Despite using several hashtags and other media tactics, his return is still up in the air
