"The Vampire Diaries" is ultimately about supernatural beings trying to live-and survive in a town named Mystic Falls. The first few seasons were about teenager Elena Gilbert falling in love and the Salvatore brothers trying to win her heart.

With the series ending soon after its eight season, fans might be wondering whats next for the actors that breathe life into their favorite characters. Here are their upcoming projects you can look forward to after the show.

Ian Somerhalder

Ian's character, Damon Salvatore, has always been a fan favorite. Damon is dark and sarcastic, the typical bad boy that has fans swooning for his secret romantic side. Together with Paul Wesleys character, Stefan, they have been integral to the shows plot and success.

Even after Nina Dobrevs exit from the show, The Vampire Diaries still continued because of Somerhalder and Wesley. They certainly pulled in a lot of fans enough to warrant a new season despite the main character leaving.

Somerhalder has directed some of the shows episodes including "The Downward Spiral" as reported by Entertainment Tonight. So, hopefully fans can expect him to delve into working behind the camera more as well as in front.

He has also finished "Time Framed", a movie in which he plays as a secret agent on a mission. Well definitely still see more of him on the big screen.

Paul Wesley

Paul Wesley plays the character of Stefan Salvatore, Damons younger brother. He and Elena fell in love but eventually broke apart. He cares deeply about his brother and his well-being despite their strained relationship and will do anything for him.

Wesley will be continuing to focus on his movie career. According to Cheat Sheet, he will be working on "Convergence", a sci-fi movie set to be released next year. Details about the project have yet to be announced.

Nina Dobrev

The former lead star played the role of Elena Gilbert. The show centered around her and her love story with the Salvatore brothers but Nina Dobrev ended up leaving after its sixth season. The actress has already played minor parts in films before like "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" (2012), and "Let's Be Cops" (2014).

This year and in 2017, fans can expect her to be in the limelight again with new roles in three major blockbusters, reported by Movie Pilot. Shell be starring in "Crash Pad", "xXx: Return of Xander Cage", and "Flatliners". Watch out for her!
