"The Simpsons" has been renewed by Fox for Seasons 29 and 30. With this renewal, the iconic animated series is set to be the longest running sitcom.

Fox renewed "The Simpsons" which is currently in Season 28. And, with this renewal announced by the network, the animated series will be the longest running show in the history of television.

In a statement, Gary Newman and Dana Walden, the Fox executives revealed that "The Simpsons" has been very important for the network and everyone in the studio. The landmark series has also been able to successfully create a cultural impact on viewers across the globe, which they feel is nothing short of brilliant, reports Huffington Post.

Notably, another show, "Gunsmoke" had the record of being aired for 635 episodes. The Western drama was aired from 1955 to 1975. However, with the renewal of "The Simpsons," the series will hit 669 episodes in Season 30, thereby breaking all records.

To announce the renewal, Homer Simpsons was heard saying, "Take that, 'Gunsmoke!' You lost a race you didn't even know you were running!" reported Fox Flash.

Ever since "The Simpsons" debuted, it has been making its mark and it is reflected in the consistent good ratings of the series, throughout seasons.  So, in a way the renewal is not really a shocker for many.

Moreover, Al Jean, the showrunner of "The Simpsons" had predicted earlier that the series would hit the mark of 30. However, at the same time, he also mentioned that Season 30 would probably be the last episode of the iconic animated series.

It is worth mentioning here that "The Simpsons" won various prestigious awards that include 32 Emmy Awards, 34 Annie Awards, a 2016 Environmental Media Award and a 2016 People's Choice Award.

Moreover, the series was the first animated series, which won Peabody award and for "The
Longest Daycare," it was nominated for an Academy Award in the year 2012.
