It took three years for BBC to finally set a release date for the American-British TV show "Sherlock" with fans eagerly waiting for Dr. Watson and Holmes to unleash their mental acuity in solving crimes.

However, according to a recent report by The Independent, "Sherlock" Season 4 might be the last one in this popular crime series, as teased by Benedict Cumberbatch, lead actor playing the character of Sherlock.

Based on an interview with GQ magazine's November issue, Cumberbatch revealed that Season 4 felt complete. He also added in a separate interview with The Independent that the show has reached a place where it might be hard to follow on soon after this season ends.

Another potent hint about Season 4 being the last one can be spotted in the show's episode list. The second episode titled "The Lying Detective," is suggestive of a story "The Dying Detective," yet another masterpiece by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

According to this episode, Sherlock convinces everyone, including Dr. Watson, that he is dying due to a rare condition. This, however, is a ruse to persuade Culverton Smith to confess about his crimes, the publication noted.

According to a statement by Steven Moffat in April, the showrunner explains that ghosts from Sherlock and John Watson's past have been progressively rising in all these seasons and is about to reach its highpoint.

Moffat also reportedly admitted to the The Telegraph that it is possible for Season 4 to be the last one. However, fans can only keep their fingers crossed, until it has been officially confirmed. As a ray of hope, Moffat also added that the show has the capability of going on forever, coming back every now and then.

"Sherlock" Season 4 is set for Jan.1, 2017, release on BBC One.
