As soon as the first season of "Descendants of the Sun" came to a close, its sequel was announced shortly after. However, since then, there has been no further update about its confirmed sequel. There were also reports that Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo, season 1 lead cast, has also refused to reprise their roles in the upcoming season due to their other projects.

For now, Song Joong Ki is busy filming Battleship Island and Song Hye Kyo is on a hiatus to break into Hollywood projects.

However, there are also rumors that "Descendants of the Sun" Season 2 is already filming and that it will feature stories of second lead couples, Seo Dae-Young (Jin Goo) and Yoon Myung-Joo (Kim Ji Won).

Jin Goo has already expressed his desire to be a part of second instalment in an interview with AllKPop. He said that he has learned a lot from "DOTS" Season 1 and will be happy to continue his part in the upcoming season too. He also said that he is amazed at the show's success not just in Korea but all across the world.

Meanwhile, even though no official word has been released by KBS about the show's return, rumors continue to do the rounds. Rumor has it that season 2 cast will be grown by real life couple, Lee Min Ho and Suzy Bae. Sources also add that Song Jong Ki and Song Hye Kyo will also be a part of the sequel, despite conflicting reports that they wont. In fact, new reports have highlighted that Bae's role will be to create problems between Hye Kyo and Joong Ki.

The reports about former lead couple to reprise their roles started doing the rounds after images of Joong Ki surfaced, showing him wearing the captain Yoo Shi Jin uniform in season 1. From there, it was easy for the fans to assume that they will indeed be a part of the sequel, as fans wait impatiently for the fan updates.

The second season of "Descendants of the Sun" is expected to release in 2017.
