The smartphone market only gets better and better. Two of the top technology companies will have their new flagships unveiled in the device arena.

Considering its reputation as the largest smartphone manufacturer for the first quarter of 2016, Samsung is out to protect that lead. With Galaxy J5, the South Korean tech giant presents another unit to reinforce its position. However, Sony is out to make a run and intends to keep the competition interesting.

Quite similar to the XZ model, the J5 makes the most of its taller, slimmer and denser frame with a curved edge design. Compared to Sony Xperia X Compact's 4.6-inch IPS LCD screen, the Samsung product institutes a larger 5.2-inch AMOLED display. Although the two share a common resolution of 1280 x 720p, the Japanese unit gets the edge due to higher pixels per inch (PPI) with 282 to the J5's 319.

In terms of processors, the X Compact has the spotlight with the presence of higher-capacity MSM8956 Snapdragon 650 chip from Qualcomm. Included in the mix are the quad-core Cortex A53 CPU, which is clocked at 1.4Ghz, and a 3GB RAM to go with an Adreno 510 graphics processor.

On the other hand, Samsung Galaxy J5 contends with Qualcomm-manufactured MSM8916 Snapdragon 410 set together with a 2GB RAM, an Adreno 306 graphics card and a quad-core Cortex A53 that clocked at 1.2Ghz.

With regards to power efficiency, the J5 is loaded with a removable 3,100mAh battery. Sony's unit puts up with its fixed or non-removable 2,700mAh energy pack.

With both having a micro SD card groove that is expandable up to 256GB, the Galaxy device imposes an external storage of 32GB to the Compact's 16.

When it comes to camera, Sony Xperia X introduces a 23-megapixel rear lens with LED flash plus a 5-megapixel secondary camera. The inclusion of face detection, touch focus, HDR and phase-detection auto-focus make the Compact a top choice for photo enthusiasts. In a contrast, Galaxy J5 2016 has a similar 5-megapixel lens to pair with a 13-megapixel camera that has a geo-tagging feature.
