It is a very terrifying and sad day for Italy.

Central Italy was hit by a 6.2 Magnitude Earthquake, 10 kilometers Southeast of Norcia (town in the Perugia province in Southeastern Umbria) at 03:36 AM on August 24, 2016, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The strong earthquake was immediately followed by an equally strong 5.5 magnitude aftershock in the same town.

Buildings and homes swayed uncontrollably while others collapsed to the ground leaving people trapped and dead in villages near the epicenter of the earthquake near the town of Norcia. People are lost and devastated right now, resorting to going to the streets for safety. Rescuers are now trying their best to rescue anyone who are trapped under the rubbles left by the strong earthquake.

Officials declared that Accumoli and Amatrice are the two cities most devastated by the strong earthquake. The Civil Protection Agency of Italy defined the earthquake as 'Severe' and rescue operations will be organized fast in Rieti.

There are already 6 confirmed deaths related to the earthquake, including two elderly couple who died in the Pescara del Tronto Village after home collapsed to the ground and four from the town of Accumoli.

Buildings in Rome, located 150 km away from the epicenter, trembled for 20 seconds during the earthquake.

In one of the most devastated towns, Amatrice Mayor Sergio Pirozzi appealed for help in accessing roads to aid people who are still trapped under their homes and buildings. The mayor also reported that half of the town of Amatrice is already gone. The town no longer has electricity.

Accumoli Mayor Stefano Petrucci from one of the two hardest hit towns, confirmed that authorities were able to locate a family consisting of two parents and two children trapped under a rubble but unfortunately, none of them are showing signs of life.
