Motorola has been committed to keeping its Android-powered smartphones on the cutting edge of the operating system's technology. Now it can further that commitment as a slew of its Droid devices are now receiving the latest version of the Google-made OS.

Accoridng to ModernReaders, the news follows the release of Android 4.4, code named KitKat, becoming available on the company's flagship Moto X smartphone. The Moto G followed closely after as the company continued to push forward for the best technology. Now it looks like Droid smartphones are going to be getting the same treatment.

On the list for devices eligible for the upgrade include: the new Droid Ultra, the Droid Maxx and the Droid Mini. The news comes less than two months after the official release of the Android 4.4 KitKat update, which is new for Verizon, which is often made fun of in the tech community for being the last, or close to the last, to update new operating systems.

Verizon Wireless is the exclusive carrier of the Droid phones, which means this move marks a bit of a turning point for the company in terms of keeping itself up-to-date. According to reports, the update began rolling out to users on Sunday.

If you are a Moto X, Moto G, Droid Ultra, Mini Or Maxx owner and you haven't found the update available, don't worry just yet. Verizon has mentioned on its official Twitter page that it has plans to roll out the new KitKat software in phases. This could mean that some users will have to wait about a week before the new operating system is available, while others might be able to download it as early as Monday.

According to Verizon, the update comes with a variety of new features and improvements including "A new full-screen mode, color emoji support, improved closed captioning support, stronger security, smarter power use and more tools and capabilities for better app development," according to Verizon.
