To make way for Microsoft Surface Pro 5's release, the Redmond-based giant is running a promo to drive up sales of its Surface Pro 4 hybrid laptops among students.

The new promotion involves taking $300 off Surface Pro 4's retail price when they buy the 4th-generation 2-in-1 device along with Xbox One. Technically speaking, the whole discount offer sounds more like free Xbox One for every Surface Pro 4 purchase according to Windows head Terry Myerson in a recent interview with The Verge.

The Surface Pro 4 device comes with Windows 10 full edition and a raft of nice features and high-end specs. Under the hood, the base model runs on Intel Core M3 for $899. The higher configuration variant powered by Intel Core i7 sells for $1599.The Student-only deal is valid up until August 14, International Business Times reported.

Meanwhile, Microsoft Corporation also mentioned that they will discontinue the production of older Surface Pro 3 units by the end of the year. According to the software giant, the Surface Pro 3 remained in production for quite some time to provide budget-conscious students a cheaper access to the world of Surface Pro hybrids, Country Caller reported. So far, no exact end-of-production date for the 3rd generation Microsoft laptop has been revealed. As for other devices, Myerson indicated that the tech giant might be launching a slew of new devices later this year which include a latest version of Microsoft Band wearable, the speculated Xbox TV devices, and so on.

In a related update, there's no official word yet on the status of Microsoft Surface Pro 5. However, reports indicate that its mass production has been delayed as the company prepares to equip the 2-in-1 laptop a new operating software. According to Vine Report, the Windows 10 OS with the Redstone 2 update isn't ready until next year's spring. The report goes that the new OS update will have better features. Moreover, Microsoft is also halting the production of the next laptop flagship as it awaits the availability of Intel's latest Kaby Lake processors coinciding the release of Windows 10 Redstone 2 update next year.
