"X-Men: Apocalypse" will put many of your favorite mutants directly in harm's way, and while not everyone may survive, we're confident 20th Century Fox isn't about to kill off Jennifer Lawrence's character.

The future of Lawrence's Mystique is a mystery to "X-Men" fans, as if that of James McAvoy's Professor Charles Xavier, Michael Fassbender's Magneto and Nicholas Hoult's Beast. The three-picture deal they all signed with Fox expires with "Apocalypse," and Lawrence has publicly waffled on her desire to return to the franchise.

"Fassbender and McAvoy and I were all talking," she said, "Like, 'Will you come back?' 'I dunno.' 'I'll come back, if you come back.' Fox should be terrified because the deal we made was like if one of us doesn't come back, none of us are safe."

Lawrence has never been shy about her distaste for Mystique's all-blue appearance and the rigorous makeup requirements of the role, saying: "You go in and you realize you're rock bottom and like this sucks and it could not suck more." Since 2011's "X-Men: First Class," Lawrence has arguably become the biggest actress in Hollywood. It's understandable if she doesn't want to continue sitting in hair and makeup for four-plus hours every day.

"I would love to come back," she said. "I love the fans, and I love the character. But then you realize how important your year is, like how important three months out of your year is. I don't know. I shouldn't be that honest."

Fox surely hopes to bring back the trio of stars for another go-around. "X-Men: Days of Future Past" set franchise records at the box office (which "Deadpool" broke this year), and while "Apocalypse" is being met with mixed reviews, the film is expected to do well financially. Locking up Lawrence for another go-around would ensure that the series retains its most important name draw.

The studio will likely wait and see how "Apocalypse" performs at the box office before making any major moves. But it's safe to say Fox is going to do its best to bring back its core trio of stars.

"X-Men: Apocalypse" opens on May 27.
