Bandai Namco and FromSoftware's "Dark Souls III" has been a huge success so far and has dominated gaming news sites ever since its release. However, according to a recently translated interview, this could be the last time that a "Souls" game will do this, as the third installment might be the last in the series.

This news comes straight from FromSoftware's Hidetaka Miyazaki, who worked as the director for "Dark Souls III." He stated that not only are there no plans for a fourth installment for the "Souls" series, but the team is currently focused on an entirely new IP.

Obviously, due to the nature of the translation, there's some room for error, but the message for "Dark Souls" appears quite clear, with Miyazaki saying, "'Dark Souls III' will be have several DLCs like previous games. But there is absolutely no plan right now for any sequels, spin-offs, or tie-ins."

However, that doesn't mean that the possibility of a future title is completely unlikely, as he added that he "cannot say for certain that the possibility is zero percent. For For example, if a From Software developer come to me five years from now and begged, 'please let me make another 'Dark Souls,' then I will not rule out the possibility to let my subordinates start a new project."

However, where one series might end, another may begin, as Miyazaki revealed that a new IP is already in development.

"What is certain for now is, to me personally 'Dark Souls' is over. So rather than make another sequel, I think it's time we take a step to a new direction. Development of a new IP has already begun."

The interview also revealed some tidbits about two other famous IP's by FromSoftware: "Demon's Souls" and "Armored Core." The first was some bad news, with Miyazaki saying, "we want to try making new things" when asked about a "Demon's Souls" remaster.

On the other hand, the second was good news. "Personally, I want to do it. After all, I was involved in three games in the series. 'Armored Core' is one of the pillars of FROM Software's lineup. But I cannot yet reveal anything," Miyazaki said when asked about the potential for a new entry in the series. The last game was "Armored Core Verdict Day," which came out in 2013 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

So in the end, "Dark Souls" might be "over" as a series, but that certainly doesn't mean that the third installment is. On the contrary, it's only getting started with two incoming expansions. The first is slated to arrive in Fall 2016, while the second is coming in early 2017.
