With so much hype surrounding the next-gen consoles from Microsoft and Sony, many are forgetting that Nintendo was the first to come out with a new console in 2013 with the release of the Wii U. Now sources close to the matter are confirming that the console has sold 222,000 units in the United States in November, according to an NPD report.

Last month the Japanese gaming company announced its goal to sell 9 million Wii Us in the United Sates by the end of its 2014 fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2014. The last official numbers reported by the company for the console's sales were 3.91 million worldwide as of late Oct. Combine those numbers with the recent sales in Japan and Europe since the beginning of November and we estimate that Nintendo has sold approximately 4.3 million Wii Us worldwide to date.

According to IGN, which originally reported the sales figures, Nintendo would need to sell between 1.1 and 1.2 million Wii U consoles every month in December, January, February and March in order to reach its sales goal.

Back when its goal was announced, several analysts belived the company would miss its 9 million bar. In response to the numbers. While the company has not officially confirmed the sales figures, it has said that it has increased sales of the console by more than 340 percent over its October numbers.

The Wii U launched in November 2012 in North America and Europe, followed by a Dec. 2012 launch in Japan. While the console is selling at a rate that currently pleases Nintendo, it is still lagging far behind the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, which have each set sales records for their respective launches earlier in November.
