Google has started sending out invitations to its existing Google Glass Explorer testers for a new edition of the wearable tech headset device. The offer is for a one-time swap of their current model for a newer, more updated version of the Glass.

The offer is only available to those who have purchased the original Explorer version prior to Oct. 28 of this year. If people choose to switch out their Glass, it will not cost them any more money as the newer edition is completely free, so there's no real reason not to make the switch.

The reason to update everyone's hardware, other than the obvious ability to test out the most recent version that will hit consumer's store shelves sometime in the next year, is that it can now work with more accessories. As Mashable points out, it is not clear at this time if older accessories for the Glass will work on the newer model.

Previously Google had come out with a single ear-bud attachment to the Glass that would make audio output available. The new variant of the Glass is also a bit faster and more durable and is compatible with upcoming prescription frames.

The update comes just a few weeks after Google invited another round of developers to purchase the Google Glass for the purpose of testing it in public and developing applications and other functionality for it. The cost of the device is pretty high at $1,500. However, joining the program early allows those who are interested in the new technology certain perks like the ability to beta test an ear bud or be eligible for a free upgrade to a more durable and faster version of the hardware.
