Canada's big cities are known for being vastly multicultural, and their restaurant scenes reflect that. You can get your hands on amazing, authentic food from any part of the world, and that's a truly beautiful thing. However, what you may not know is that Canada itself has a wide array of foods from its own history and tradition.

We'll tell you all about some hearty dishes from Canada's cuisine. They'll get you through the winter just like they do in the north.

1. Poutine.

This is by far the most well-known Canadian dish. Originating in the province of Quebec, it's a delicious combination of french fries, cheese curds and brown gravy. It's the best drunk food in the world, and it'll keep you warm for hours.

2. Nanaimo Bars.

These dessert bars originated in Nanaimo, British Columbia, and they're made up of crumbled cookies, custard and chocolate. Sweet and delicious, you can find variations all over the country.

3. Ketchup Chips.

Yup, there are chips that are flavored with powdered ketchup. They're as tangy and delicious as the condiment, and it's shocking that they haven't caught on in America.

4. Tourtiere.

This Quebecois meat pie is made with ground pork, and it's spiced heavily with warming spices like clove, thyme, cinnamon and pepper. It's eaten on Christmas eve.

5. Tarte au Sucre, or Sugar Pie.

This super-sweet, decadent pie is beige through and through. A flaky crust holds a gooey filling of brown sugar and condensed milk. It's as sweet as can be, as you can imagine, and it's delicious. Chase with a glass of milk.

6. Peameal Bacon.

Known often as Canadian Bacon, this is back bacon that's brined, rolled in cornmeal, and sliced. The cornmeal used to be for preservation, but now it's because it's delicious.

7. Montreal Smoked Meat.

Similar to the smoked meat found in delis in New York, it's spiced differently and cut a bit thicker. It's often served on rye with a pickle and yellow mustard. For the true authentic experience, pair it with a cherry soda.

8. Split Pea Soup.

This hearty yellow-green soup is as comforting as can be, and it's often served with ham or a ham hock.

9. Rappie Pie.

This eastern Canadian pie is made with finely grated potato, meat or seafood broth, and some shredded meat for good measure. It can also be called Rapture Pie.
