Everyone has experienced waking up with under-eye circles and we all understand that diminishing their dark appearance is not so easy to do. There are products that helps conceal them, but some are expensive and others aren't effective.

A DIY beauty hack presented by blogger Farah Dhukai is going viral on Instagram because she has demonstrated an easy and rather affordable fix for dark under circles. She makes use of turmeric for trick, but experts advised against following the process so eagerly.

Dhukhai is seen mixing the turmeric with buttermilk in the video, and then she carefully applies this using a big makeup brush under her eyes. Once the mixture dried, the dark circles magically disappeared. So, how did that happen?

"Turmeric temporarily stains the skin yellow, which is an optical neutralizer for the color purple, just as green is for red," Lisa Donofrio, an Associate Clinical Professor of Dermatology at Yale University School of Medicine, said. But Donofrio pointed out, the trick might not work on someone with lighter complexion who might end up looking jaundiced instead.

Turmeric, a common kitchen ingredient used in India, is also a favorite beauty ingredient among Indian women. It has been known to treat wounds, skin disease and pimples because of its anti-inflammatory properties, and it's usually added to homemade face masks. "Sometimes I'll put on fresh yogurt as a mask with a little turmeric powder in it - this is like an Indian trick. The turmeric is a healer for your skin," Prinyaka Chopra, "Quantico" actress, shared.

But turmeric has a peppery effect, which might sting on the skin. "I would caution people with sensitive skin to stay away from a scrub containing turmeric because of the risk of irritation," Joseph Zeichner, the director of dermatology at New York's Mount Sinai Hospital, said.

Cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Christine Choi Kim advises doing a patch test before trying turmeric on the skin. "Apply a little on the inside surface of your forearm, then wait a full two days to see if you have any allergic reaction," she said. Better yet, seek your dermatologist's advise before trying this all natural ingredient, especially if you're going to use this around your eyes.
