"Daredevil" showrunner Steven S. DeKnight has been chosen to direct "Pacific Rim 2," the sequel to Guillermo Del Toro and Travis Beacham's 2013 monster flick, for Legendary Pictures, Deadline reported.

DeKnight, who will be making his directorial film debut with the project, is the creator of Starz TV series "Spartacus" and also served as an executive producer and head writer on the first season of the Marvel series "Daredevil" on Netflix. His other television credits include "Dollhouse," "Smallville" and "Angel."

Del Toro is currently busy with the "Fantastic Voyage" remake and "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark," but he will continue to serve as a producer on "Pacific Rim 2" along with Legendary's Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni, in addition to Mary Parent. Jillian Share will serve as an executive producer, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Jon Spaihts of "Prometheus" fame wrote the screenplay for "Pacific Rim 2," which will be distributed worldwide in 3D, Entertainment Weekly reported.

Del Toro announced the sequel in June 2014 and was slated to start filming last November. However, the film's production got delayed, and then Universal pulled the movie out of its release schedule in September 2015, fueling speculation that the film had been shelved. However, the filmmaker tweeted last month that the sequel had not been cancelled and he was going to see the movie through "one way or another."
