Grab the tequila and limes, Feb. 22 is National Margarita Day! The margarita is one of the best known and loved cocktails out there and normally consists of tequila, triple sec and lime juice and can be served frozen or on the rocks.

There is much debate over exactly who invented the classic margarita, according to the National Margarita Website. The drink is thought to have been invented in the 1930s or 1940s, while the frozen version came along in the 1970s when a bartender converted a soft serve ice cream machine into a frozen margarita machine.

While a great margarita is usually served with fresh ingredients, many restaurants and bars these days use "margarita mix" instead, leaving the drink to be high in fructose corn syrup. In order to enjoy a guilt-free National Margarita Day, check out these five skinny recipes.

Mango-Avocado Margarita

Mangoes and avocados are two ingredients that work well with the classic flavors in a margarita. This version of a frozen margarita uses the sweetness from the mangoes and the creaminess of the avocados to make the perfect drink without all the calories from sugar. In order to spice up the recipe a little more, add a pinch of chili powder to the salted rim of the drink. Get the recipe from My Recipes here.

Cucumber Lime Margarita

Nothing quite says "fresh" like limes and cucumbers. While the vegetable may seem like an odd choice for a Mexican-inspired cocktail, the cucumber delivers a subtle and refreshing twist on a plain margarita. This margarita from Tastes Lovely is sugar free and only has 135 calories per drink. Click here for the recipe from Tastes Lovely.

Bethenny Frankel's Classic Skinny Margarita

"The Real Housewives of New York" star Bethenny Frankel has made millions of dollars from her line of Skinnygirl cocktails, and her Skinnygirl Margarita was the drink that started it all. This margarita is only 150 calories thanks to the 100 percent agave tequila the recipe calls for. In order to liven the cocktail up a little more, one could even add an optional splash of club soda. Check out the recipe here.

Blood Orange Pomegranate Margarita

For someone who loves margaritas but hates the hangover that comes the next day due to the sweetness of the drink, then this margarita is perfect. The mix of the blood orange juice, pomegranate juice and low-calorie agave nectar makes this margarita perfectly bittersweet. Get the recipe from Heather Christo here.

Strawberry Jalapeno Margarita

Strawberries and jalapenos may seem like two flavors that do not go well with each other, but add in a dash of lime and a couple shots of tequila for a sweet but spicy margarita. The trick to make this drink skinny is the agave in the raw. This ingredient is low calorie, fat free and even gluten free and can be used to add sweetness to basically anything that calls for sweetener. Check out the recipe from the Cookie Rookie here.
