Microsoft has announced that the company will recall possibly hundreds of thousands of wall chargers over a known overheating issue, reports The Inquirer.

The chargers, however, are not in any way related to the company's new flagship devices, the Surface Pro 4 and the Surface Book. Rather, Microsoft is recalling chargers that were bundled with the original Surface Pro, the Surface Pro 2 and the Surface Pro 3.

"As a result of damage caused by AC power cords being wound too tightly, twisted or pinched over an extended period of time, a very small proportion of Surface Pro customers have reported issues with their AC power cord. We will be releasing details of how customers can obtain a free replacement cable shortly," a Microsoft spokesperson said, according to Mashable.

As of this writing, customers have not reported any untoward incidents about the overheating chargers, though there are a number of users in online forums who stated that they noticed sparks from their chargers during continued use.

Thus, it appears like the recall is Microsoft's way to exhibit an abundance of caution. The company has taken full responsibility for the charger issue as well, stating that any customers whose chargers are recalled would be replaced free of charge, according to Tech Week Europe.

Microsoft's Surface line has been one of the company's most successful products, with sales growing 117 percent last year.
