Digital payment services really do seem like a probable new dimension for the conventional consumer, as Visa Inc., announced that a number of prominent merchants, including Starbucks and Walgreens Boots, would now be accepting payments through Visa Checkout, according to Reuters.

The digital payments service, which was launched for public consumption in July 2014, allows its users to store their payment information without leaving a merchant's website. Since it was launched, its user base has significantly grown, with more than 10 million consumer accounts across more than 16 countries.

Other merchants that are set to support Visa Checkout include the NFL Shop, the Home Shopping Network and Match. Visa also states that Walmart is set to support Visa Checkout later this year, as well, reports Digital Trends.

The utilization of Visa Checkout has been steadily increasing, with a number of big-name retailers, including Best Buy, Gap and Staples already supporting the system. Sam Shrauger, senior vice president of Visa's Digital Solutions, believes that the growth of Visa Checkout is just starting.

"We are seeing tremendous Visa Checkout growth as we enter 2016 and are greatly encouraged by the enthusiastic response from consumers and merchants alike. By re-engineering the Visa card for the digital world, we're delivering a better way to pay through connected and mobile devices," he said, according to The Street.

The announcement has been embraced warmly by investors, with Visa's stocks surging 0.37 percent to $74.19 during late morning trading on Tuesday.
