Former One Direction member Zayn Malik has moved on from the boy band and is looking to become his own person. The singer opened up to Billboard magazine about life after One Direction and his upcoming music.

In the interview, Malik told the magazine that he and Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan keep their distance from each other. "I had every intention of remaining friends with everybody, but I guess certain phone numbers have changed and I haven't received calls from a lot of people," Malik said.

"I've reached out to a few of them and not got a reply," he continued. "Certain people have pride issues, but it's stuff you overcome in time."

Malik, who is currently linked to model Gigi Hadid, discussed his former band throughout the entire interview and even admitted to not to listening "Made in the A.M.," which was the first album that One Direction released since Malik left the group early last year. The 22-year-old singer said that he liked the song "Drag Me Down" but was not a fan of "Perfect."

"I'll be honest. I thought the first single was quite cool. I heard the second single and ... yeah, I didn't buy the album," he said.

Malik is currently working on his first solo record with RCA and is expected to release it in the Spring.

"It doesn't feel like choreographed pop," said RCA chairman/CEO Peter Edge of Malik's upcoming album. "It's widely rumored that Harry is working on a record, and I'm sure it won't sound like 1D, exactly. But it feels like maybe Zayn's further along, musically."
