A document entitled "About the Strategy of National Security of Russian Federation," signed by Russian President Valdimir Putin, names, for the first time, the U.S. as one of the threats to Russia's national security.

"About the Strategy of National Security of Russian Federation", is a successor to a 2009 document, that had not anticipated any threat perception from the United States or NATO and had been endorsed by then- President Dmitry Medvedev, the current prime minister. The latest appraisal is a clear indication of how relationships between the West and Russia have deteriorated over the past few years.

"The strengthening of Russia happens against the background of new threats to the national security, which has complex and interrelated nature," the document reads, according to Reuters.

The downturn in relations was accelerated by the annexation of the Crimean Peninsula by Russia in March 2014. The U.S. and the E.U. reacted by imposing sanctions against Russian individuals and companies. This move was countered by Moscow by imposing sanctions on the entry of food items from the E.U. The document states that the United States supported an "anti-constitutional coup d'etat in Ukraine."

The document states that Russia's independent policy, "both international and domestic" has caused "counteraction from the USA and its allies, which are striving to retain their dominance in global affairs," reported Business Insider.

The document concludes that this reaction from the United States will probably lead to "political, economical, military and informational pressure" on Russia, reported the New York daily News.

Russian strategy, vis-à-vis, its national security, will be planned by different state bodies, on the basis of this document.
