Nintendo has announced the official launch of the Wii mini in the United States for $99.99, according to a news release.

The console is a redesign version of the Wii, and has more than 1,300 titles for the gaming system.  It is matte black with a red border and comes with Mario Kart, along with a red controller and matching Nunchuk.

"Wii mini offers the same fun experience as Wii, which has been enjoyed by millions of people around the world," said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing, in a statement.  "And it comes packaged with Mario Kart Wii, a multiplayer Mario racing game that is one of the best-selling Wii games. At such a great price, it is an extraordinary value for shoppers this holiday season."

According to the news release, more than 100 millions units were sold of the Wii.  However, the Wii U has not sold as well, Forbes reports.

"The Wii has shipped over 100 million units in its lifetime, but its successor, the Wii U, is having a much harder time, and not just because a lot of people still think that it's only an add-on to the Wii," according to Forbes.  "Nintendo is hoping that the system's lifespan will mirror that of the Nintendo 3Ds, which looked like a failure until the company turned things around with a spate of highly desirable first party titles. "

"Super Mario 3D World, Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze and Super Smash Bros. are the highlights of the projected lineup for the Wii U," Forbes continued.  "But the grand old man of gaming will have a tough time competing for mindshare against Sony SNE +2.21% and Nintendo's shiny new boxes."

No official release date for the Wii Mini has been set, but the news release confirmed the console will be available by mid-November.
