"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" showed no signs of slowing down over the holiday weekend and officially became the fastest film to gross $1 billion at the global box office. The seventh film in the "Star Wars" series dethroned the previous record-holder "Jurassic World."

It only took "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" 12 days to cross the $1 billion mark, while it took the dinosaur film starring Chris Pratt 13 days. The newest "Star Wars" film is still ranking in the huge bucks and made $153.5 million domestically to bring the U.S. total to $544.6 million. The films stellar weekend brought the global figure to nearly $1.1 billion, according to Variety.

The holiday weekend also saw the biggest Christmas weekend of all time and beat the previous record from 2009 down. That year, the holiday box office brought in around $269.8 million thanks to films such as "Sherlock Holmes" and "Avatar," which is still the highest grossing film of all time, The Huffington Post reported. This year's holiday weekend saw the release of films such as "Daddy's Home," starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, "Joy," starring Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper, Will Smith's "Concussion" and a remake of "Point Break."

While "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" did well over the weekend, the other films performed better than expected against the huge film. "Daddy's Home" came in second with $38.8 million, "Joy" brought in $17.5 million, "Concussion" nabbed $11 million and "Point Break" earned $10.2 million.

While "Concussion" and "Point Break" were new Christmas releases, the films did not reach the top five at the box office. The two new films were beaten by the Amy Poehler and Tina Fey comedy "Sisters," which made $13.9 million in its second week out, while "Alive and the Chipmunks: The Road Trip" rounded out the top five with $12.7 million, according to Entertainment Weekly.
