A recent study conducted by the NYC Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) has just proved that it is indeed more expensive to be a woman. According to the results of the study, women end up spending thousands of dollars more than men on products that are virtually the same, according to The Consumerist.

The report in examined the prices for a number of key products, from toys and accessories, children's clothing, adult clothing, personal health care products, to home health care products that are geared towards senior citizens.

According to the data from the study, women's products cost close to 7 percent more than the same products for men across all the categories the study was based from. Based on the results of the report, woman paid 7 percent more on average for toys and accessories, 4 percent more for children's clothing, 8 percent more for adult clothing, 13 percent more for personal care products, and 8 percent for home health care products for seniors, reports Value Walk.

This is not the first time that the discrepancy in costs for consumer products have been studied, however. In 1994 alone, the State of California studied the issue of gender-based pricing for services. The 1994 study eventually concluded that women effectively paid an annual "gender tax" of about $1,351 for the same services as men.

This discrepancy in costs has been dubbed as a "pink tax," since in many cases, the only difference between the products for women and those for men is the feminine color scheme. A scooter which was picked for the study, for one, costs $24.99 for the red variant and $49.99 for the pink model, according to Slate.

Overall, the study has found that women's products were more expensive 42 percent of the time, while men's products were only more costly 18 percent of the time.
