Apple is reportedly reaching out to many of the iPhone 5S owners who are experiencing a battery draining issue as a result of a manufacturing error. According to the company, the problem only affects a "very limited" number of the new iPhone 5S devices.

"We recently discovered a manufacturing issue affecting a very limited number of iPhone 5S devices that could cause the battery to take longer to charge or result in reduced battery life," Apple spokesperson Teresa Brewer told the New York Times. "We are reaching out to customers with affected phones and will provide them with a replacement phone."

According to PC World, in addition to the reduced battery life problem, the issue could also mean the iPhone will need to charge for longer. The company was not able to elaborate on exactly how many devices were affected by the issue or exactly what had caused the battery and charging issues.

Apple said it had sold about nin million new iPhones in the first weekend that the device went on sale, so it's possible that the problem is on a very large scale.

Apple isn't the only smartphone maker that has been having trouble with is batteries in recent weeks. Samsung Electronics reportedly offered some of its Galaxy S4 owners a replacement battery because of problems with the existing ones being able to hold a charge.

According to the Times Apple has faced problems with defective batteries in the past. In 2006, it issued a recall from some laptops because their batteries contained cells manufactured by Sony. These batteries were causing some devices to explode.

The iPhone 5S was launched in Sept. with a 64-bit A7 processing chip, an 8-megapixel camera and a biometric Touch ID fingerprint scanner.
