A security guard fatally shot a man Thursday morning in the lobby of the Dearborn Heights police and court complex in Michigan, prompting authorities to place the building and two nearby schools in lockdown.

The shooting occurred a little before 9 a.m. when a man, who remains unidentified, lunged at the security guard during the screening process, reported FOX's Detroit affiliate WJBK-TV. Sources indicate that the man was prompted to attack the guard after refusing to take his belongings out of his pockets, becoming irate following the guard's insistence to do so.

No officers, including the one involved in the shooting, or civilians were injured during the incident.

"Everything is secure inside. Everyone inside is safe," said Cpl. Robert Poshadlo.

Following the shooting, officers began evacuating the building, having people take one exit from the parking lot, reported The Detroit News. As the civilians were leaving, one person noted that officers were keeping tabs of each motorist's plate number and driver's license information.

"I don't know if they thought they were witnesses or what," she said.

On top of the lockdowns, there is now a large police presence in the area, with officers reportedly armed with "large, assault-type weapons" and the entire area cordoned off, reported the Detroit Free Press

In the meantime, the investigation of the incident has been handed over to the Michigan State Police. No statements about the incident are expected to be made until the investigation is completed.
