Elon Musk and other tech giants have announced the creation of OpenAI, a billion dollar non-profit organization set to focus on artificial intelligence research beneficial to humanity.

Sam Altman of Y Combinator is the co-founder to Musk, while other investors include Peter Thiel and Reid Hoffman.

Other tech companies that are also heavily invested in artificial intelligence include Apple, Facebook, Google and Microsoft, but Musk has expressed fears about these firms because they are profit-driven, CNN Money reported.

In fact, earlier this year, Musk joined Stephen Hawking and Bill Gates, among others, to address the dangers of artificial intelligence, as HNGN previously reported.

Musk also discussed these fears and sentiments with the investors of OpenAI.

"We discussed 'what is the best thing we can do to ensure the future is good?' We could sit on the sidelines or we can encourage regulatory oversight, or we could participate with the right structure with people who care deeply about developing A.I. in a way that is safe and is beneficial to humanity," said Musk, according to The New York Times.

Ilya Sutskever, former Google employee and known AI researcher, will be the director of the research company.

Staff also includes Trevor Blackwell, who works on humanoid robots, Vicki Cheung, who works on speech recognition software, and Pamela Vagata, who worked on artificial intelligence at Facebook, among others, according to USA Today.

"Researchers will be strongly encouraged to publish their work, whether as papers, blog posts, or code, and our patents (if any) will be shared with the world. We'll freely collaborate with others across many institutions and expect to work with companies to research and deploy new technologies," the OpenAI website states.
