While hotels have not quite gotten the same low rank in terms of satisfying its customers as much as low-cost airlines, some hotels have earned themselves some infamy with customers when it comes to a number of unwanted factors.

Sometimes, no matter how nice a hotel is from the outside, there are a some very undesirable things that happen within the hotel's walls that customers usually find out a little too late.

Let us look at the some of American hotels' dirty little secrets.

Mandatory Fees

Though some hotels would advertise rock-bottom prices in their ads, customers usually find themselves paying a bunch of other fees upon checking out. These fees could range from housekeeping to porterage, which end up raising the bill to such a degree that customers end up paying the hotel's regular price anyway, according to USA Today.

No Protection From Overbooking

During the days of old, hotels still compensated guests who get oversold by mistake by finding them alternative accommodations and even paying for their first night. Currently, however, there is no such protection. Thus, even if you have a valid reservation and the hotel ends up making a mistake by giving your room to someone else, there's really nothing you could do.

Slow, Expensive Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi is pretty much the norm nowadays. However, there are still a number of hotels who do not offer this service for free. Sometimes, Internet service is considered as an additional charge, with some prominent hotels charging about $15 to $20 a day for Wi-Fi access. Oh, and what's worse is that the connection, though expensive, is usually very slow.

Air, or the Lack Thereof

Most modern hotels, especially the budget ones, feature rooms which are very small, and some don't even have windows. Thus, guests would usually have to count on the hotel's climate control to make things easier. If you find yourself in a heated room in the middle of summer, you will be in for a bad night. The fact that some hotels even charge extra for air conditioning makes for a very bad hotel experience.

So next time you're thinking of booking a room in a hotel, make sure you watch out for these things. These are actually just the tip of the iceberg, so be very wary!
