Scott Weiland, the voice behind a number of prominent rock and grunge bands, including Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver, passed away in his sleep Thursday night. He was 48 years old. His manager, Tom Vitorino, confirmed the singer's death, though he said that details surrounding the incident will be made public on Friday, according to Rolling Stone.

A message on the singer's official Facebook page stated that Weiland died in Bloomington, Minn., where he was on tour with his current band, Scott Weiland and The Wildabouts. The band was scheduled to perform in Medina, a nearly location, on Friday.

The concert has since been cancelled.

Though an extremely talented singer and charismatic frontman, he had been known to have had problems with substance abuse throughout his career, reports FOX News.

In 1995, he was arrested for possession of crack and heroin. A few years later, Weiland pleaded guilty to felony heroin possession in 1998. Some even believe that Weiland's history of drug abuse was one of the primary reasons behind the breakup of the Stone Temple Pilots in 2003.

His talent was remarkable, however, which is shown in his success not only as a band singer, but as a solo artist as well. Apart from standing onstage with rock immortals like Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum, he also released four solo albums.

Weiland is survived by Noah and Lucy, his two children with ex-wife Mary Forsberg, as well as his current wife, Jamie Wachtel, whom he married in 2013.
